I cannot give a book a better recommendation. It has changed my understanding of my own life as well as the lives of other women I know.
In the 1980s, Maureen Murdock was a student of Joseph Campbell the author of The Hero With A Thousand Faces. She asked Campbell about women completing the “hero’s journey” as he called it. His answer was that women do not need to complete the journey. Women are the destination.
This didn’t sit well with Murdock and she wrote The Heroine’s Journey in response. Women are not a destination. Women are not a prize. Women have our own unique mythology that has been hidden from us. Murdock lays out our shared mythos for us to reclaim.
