BF-26: Whiskey Nights & Tequila Sunrises (Chapter 10)

497746500

Reese’s eyes flew open the the next morning. Looking around, she could see that she was home and in her own bed, wearing last night’s clothes. Breathing a sigh of relief, she started puzzling the pieces of the night before together.

BF-26: Outside Inwards Upside Down (Chapter 09)

Reese knew exactly where she was going as she ascended the stairs back to the Psych Ward on the third floor, but she still felt disoriented. As she approached the doors of the ward, she determined there was no way to sort out what had really happened in Room 26 – at least not at this time. So, she thought it best to put it out of her head for the rest of the workday. She had enough duties to keep her hands busy and mind occupied anyway.

BF-26: The Elevator (Chapter 08)

The elevator door opened and she stepped in. Lee looked up in a slight surprise to see her. She smiled at him and said “Hi! How has your shift been?” as she pushed the button for her floor. He looked into her eyes for a moment before looking away. He pretended to look for something in his tool cart. He managed to get out “ok” before falling into silence.

BF-26: Fresh Air (Chapter 07)

As Reese descended the staircase from the Psychiatric Ward, she attempted to shake off the memory of whatever it was that had happened in Room 26. But with each step, she felt her mind spiraling further down the proverbial rabbit hole. Did what she see really happened – or was it just all in her head? It felt impossible to decide.

Reese didn’t intend what happened next, but it happened just the same. With each seemingly slow and deliberate step he took towards her, she felt a mounting terror. Yet, she couldn’t move. It was as if her feet were frozen to the floor. Along with the freezing sensation, she felt something else. It felt to her as if the air pressure around her was rising rapidly as he closed in on her. If he felt it too, he didn’t show any reaction.

BF-26: Frustration (Chapter 05)

And he was the reason I threw away my career in the field of mental health care. The day started off just as any other. I relieved the overnight nurse assistant and listened to her shift report. Nothing extraordinary stood out to me. The new patient in room 12 had been up all night pacing and singing to herself, but she finally tired out around 4 a.m. and fell fast asleep. The patient in room 15 had a scheduled family visit over the lunch hour. And the patient in 6 was to be discharged later in the day.

BF-26: What goes around comes around (Chapter 04)

Maybe this was his plan from the start – as payback for me breaking his young heart fifteen years ago. I always knew he was smart in unconventional ways, but I never considered him to be devious. If payback was his goal, he hit is mark expertly. I fell for it. I fell for him all over again. And this time, my opressive parents weren’t in the picture to push us apart. We also weren’t the carefree teenagers we had been back then either. Life had been tough on each of us in its own way.

BF-26: David (Chapter 03)

Finally, they were alone together in the booth. It wasn’t an I-Hop, but pancakes were pretty much a horse apiece when it came to late-night dining. Kayleigh looked nervous. And any relief she may have felt from the waitress’s brief presence disappeared the moment she returned to the kitchen.

BF-26: Kayleigh (Chapter 02)

It had already been a long night and the bars had been closed for only an hour. Kayleigh wiped her hand across her brow, stretched her back, and let loose a long sigh.

“Order up,” Mike called out.

“I’m on it,” said Kayleigh with resignation.

BF-26: Reese (Chapter 01)

The first time it happened, she didn’t understand what it was taking place within herself. It was the first day of school – the first day of junior high. Reese had been dreading this day all summer. The months-long break gave her an escape from the daily torment subjected upon her by fellow classmates. Well, one classmate in particular – the pretty, the popular, the stuck up and snobby Elaine Sanden.
