- Fear they won’t be believed… because often, they aren’t.
- Knowledge they will face scrutiny, bullying, and worse.
- Sometimes they can’t speak out for a variety of reasons. Those reasons might include dependency on their abuser, denial about what happened, they have been threatened, they are dead.
- Telling someone else makes it more real. As long as they keep the story to themselves, they can control the narrative. Once the words are out, they can never be taken back and they lose control over who knows. For survivors of sexual assault, it is important to regain a sense of control over their own bodies and their lives.
